TOURISM DECLARES A CLIMATE EMERGENCY

Regional Air has signed up to Tourism Declares‚ an initiative that supports tourism businesses‚ organizations and individuals in declaring a climate emergency and taking the right approach in making sustainability a key part of our business.

As the environmental impact of the aviation industry takes centre stage‚ the aviation community‚ through ICAO‚ has launched a Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Tanzania is one of the states signed up to participate. Even though‚ as a domestic operator‚ we are exempted from the scheme‚ we  believe that before new technologies‚ sustainable aviation fuel‚ electric planes become a common place we still have a crucial role to play in accelerating sustainability development in the industry.

Like all signatories‚ we have committed to the following five actions:

  1. 1.     Develop a Climate Emergency Plan

  1. 2.     Share commitment and progress publicly

  1. 3.     Cut carbon emissions

  1. 4.     Work Together

  1. 5.     Advocate for Change

Please consider also declaring at tourism declares and follow on @tourismdeclares on Twitter‚ Facebook or Linkedin

CLIMATE EMERGENCY PLAN

As a domestic flying company‚ we fully acknowledge that‚ in offering access to remote destinations in Tanzania and East Africa as a whole‚ we contribute to the 2% world global carbon emission through aviation (IATA figures).

At Regional Air Services Ltd (RAS) and our group of airlines AirKenya Express Ltd  & AeroLink Uganda Ltd we believe tourism conducted in a sustainable and responsible manner can help fund conservation and rehabilitation of endangered species and their natural habitat‚ empower local communities through education and infrastructure and much more.

Climate Emergency Plan:

We recognise the need to accurately measure our carbon emissions through our partnership with eCollective Travel. We will use their resources and data to better track‚ manage and improve our environmental impact.

We will continue to implement our recycling of single-use plastics on our flights through our partnership with Dunia designs as a way to promote and practice responsible tourism.

We will continue to evolve our plan as we grow and new technology in aviation is made towards better environmental impact. Ensuring we always make the best choice when we have direct influence over our environmental impact.

We will further develop and champion the work we have done and is being done by our group of airlines in forging ways forward in supporting the local communities we work with.

To have the flexibility as a small air operator to learn and implement best practices and strategies in the industry that may enable us to cut our carbon emission through the support of Tourism Declares.
